Local Chicago Band Wins Coveted Spot on Motley Crue Tour

Talk about living the dream!  If you were in a local band, hadn’t made it anywhere near the “big time” yet, and just loved playing your tunes, what could be bigger than getting asked to take a coveted spot on Motley Crue tour?!

That’s exactly what happened to a band called the Last Vegas.  According to reports,

“On a recent night at the venerable Los Angeles music club the Whisky a Go Go, the Last Vegas walked away from a battle-of-the-bands contest with what most developing acts can only dream of: an opening slot on a major arena tour, a recording deal and a management contract.”

Wow.  Life really can change with the blink of an eye!  In addition to that coveted spot on the Crue tour, the band will also take home a $25,000 check from The Guitar Center, and another $20,000 in brand new gear from Gibson Guitars.  Um, I’m beyond jealous now.  Just a few days after mentioning not only the 50th Anniversary line of guitars from Gibson, but the Dark Fire as well, I’d do just about anything to get my hands on $20k in Gibson Gear!

Regardless, just goes to show you that even the local guys, even the underdogs, and even the unheard-of’s can make it.  Keep picking away on those guitars, walking those bass lines and turning up the distortion, it could happen to you.

Best Buy Expanding To Musical Instruments

Hoping to pick up on the absence of Guitar Center’s and convenience, Best Buy has announced that they will begin carrying musical instruments. The store won’t change into solely a musical instrument retailer, but they will allocate a certain amount of space per store to instruments/musical equipment.

“The nation’s largest consumer electronics retailer will announce Tuesday that it plans to open as many as 85 of the music centers inside its stores by the end of the year and could add even more locations in the future, executives told The Associated Press.”

“Each site will use about 2,500 square feet of retail space and include roughly 1,000 different products with well-known brand names such as Fender, Gibson, Drum Workshop and Roland.”

“When the rollout is complete, Best Buy — already considered by many investors to be a global powerhouse in the electronics retailing world — will become the second-largest instrument seller in the country based on locations.”

While I am usually weary of huge corporations in general, I really think this is a postive thing. A lot of kids in smaller towns or areas don’t have any local music stores or even Guitar Center and I can see a lot of kids getting their first guitar from a place like Best Buy.

Finally!

Ok, so I forgot to take pictures of the guitar this weekend, but I got it back and it sounds and plays amazing. I will try to get pics up this week! The DiMarzio’s sound great, the neck and action feels great and my girlfriend was really happy with it. The tech at Guitar Center, John did a great job working out all the issues, and did a great job with the intonation. When I went to pick it up, I stopped in their Vintage room and played a 70’s Stratocaster, and now I’m thinking about buying it…I really should stay away from nice gear…

If you don’t know what the Vintage room is at Guitar Center - Hollywood, it’s basically a huge room filled with only sought-after vintage guitars. A lot of famous players, like John Frusciante, come in and buy guitars there. Somebody posted a clip on youtube, if you want to see what I’m talking about. Basically any guitarist’s dream come true, (not your wallet’s dream come true though)…
